Rationale

SMRs could be built closer to cities (e.g. district heating)

  • High-level nuclear safety needed but also health and safety, environmental issues, safeguards, etc.

SMRs should be directly connected to energy intensive industries

  • On top of nuclear safety, various other internal and external safety aspects e.g. fireexternal hazard caused by industrial facilities (heat, H2, etc.), safeguards

New opportunities

  • SMRs pre-licensing and licencing phases
  • Share existing knowledge in EU countries
  • Collaboration with ENSREG/WENRA and other initiatives (IAEA NHSI, ENISS, etc.)

SAFETY INDUSTRY POSITION PAPERS

Facilitate common safety assessments by EU regulators by providing “industry position papers” on safety topics in close collaboration with PWGs as input to early assessment of SMR projects by panels of interested EU regulatory authorities (“NZIA Regulatory sandboxes” or other mechanisms such as Joint Early Review (JER) according to regulators’ decisions)
